Hamburg Airport presents the 2018 summer timetable

Around 60 airlines fly to 130 destinations. The airlines are focussing their attention for the 2018 summer season on sun and swimming destinations along with major cities throughout Europe. Eight completely new destinations are joining Hamburg’s route network: Ljubljana, Zakynthos, Jersey, Trieste, Bilbao, Kayseri, Samos and Bergen. On another eight routes, passengers will now have the choice of additional airlines.

Hamburg Airport once again “Best Regional Airport Europe”
22.03.2018Following on from victories in 2011, 2012 and 2017, Hamburg Airport has won the renowned Skytrax World Airport Award in the “Best Regional Airport Europe” category for the fourth time. Skytrax defines a “Regional Air-port” as any airport that primarily offers domestic and intracontinental flights with a few intercontinental services. The prize, awarded exclusively on the basis of independent passenger surveys, was presented on 21 March at the Passenger Terminal EXPO in Stockholm.

“17 in 17”: Passenger growth of 8.6 percent
17.62 million passengers used Hamburg Airport in 2017. This is around 1.4 million passengers, or 8.6 percent, more than in 2016. This was the first time that there were more than 17 million passengers in one year in the history of the airport. Aircraft movements, totalling around 159,780 in 2017, were lower than in the year 2000, when just under 10 million passengers used Hamburg Airport. Compared to 2016, the number of aircraft movements declined by around 0.5 percent.

Hamburg Tourism promoting Hamburg as "city of contrasts"

“Hamburg is not only extremely international, it is also dynamic, diverse and full of exciting contrasts,” said Michael Otremba, Managing Director of Hamburg Tourismus GmbH. The city’s image is characterised by elegant villas along Lake Alster that contrast with the harbour. The same applies to culture and cuisine. Have a pizza for lunch and enjoy award-cuisine in the evening. The international music scene can easily be found during the Reeperbahn Festival as well as world-famous classical music stars at the Elbphilharmonie.

UNESCO prize for Hamburg

Hamburg has pursued the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions since 2007 and is increasingly focusing on renewable energies. It is also aiming for a 30 per cent reduction of CO2 emissions by 2030 and 80 per cent by 2050 through combined climate and sustainability strategies. Commenting on the award, the jury noted: “Hamburg was selected for its large-scale programme ‘Hamburg learns sustainability’, which fights climate change through an extensive set of projects, materials and green events that serve to educate and promote sustainable development.

"Above average importance" of aviation for Hamburg

Aviation is of “above-average” importance for Hamburg’s economy as the third largest civil aviation location in the world, according a new study by the VDI/VDE Institute for Innovation and Technology (iit) and the Hamburg Aviation cluster. The survey provides extensive figures on employment, value creation and innovative aviation activities across the Hamburg Metropolitan Region. Apart from “anchoring companies” like Airbus, Lufthansa Technik, Hamburg Airport, research institutions, start-ups and universities help drive the industry ahead.

Hamburg Christmas markets
End of November - 30 December, 2019
Discover history, tradition and a Hanseatic heritage at one of Hamburg's many wonderful Christmas markets. The prettiest is set just outside Hamburg's most impressive town hall. Hosted by Roncalli's Circus, you can discover lots of lovingly decorated stalls and the punch is even served by clowns and circus artists. But there are a variety of other 'styles' of market dotted around the city.

The Japanese cherry blossom festival with firework display is being held on the Outer Alster since 1968. This gift from the Japanese community to the City of Hamburg brings hundreds of thousands of people to the Alster every year.
