17.23 million passengers used Hamburg Airport in 2018
In 2018, 17.23 million passengers used Hamburg Airport, approx. 2.2 percent less than in 2017. Aircraft movements, totalling around 156,400 in 2018, were lower than in the year 2000, when just under 10 million passengers used Hamburg Airport. Compared to 2017, the number of aircraft movements declined by around 2.1 percent.

Pioneering ideas have always changed the world. Yet even clever minds need an environment in which to develop and implement such concepts. Hamburg offers the best conditions for such endeavours. Innovations and the resulting jobs form the basis for economic growth and science in Hamburg so much so that the city is on course to become one of the most innovative locations in Europe. Frank Horch, Senator for Economics, Traffic and Innovation, noted: “The city will only remain forward-looking, if we can concentrate creativity and the exchange between commerce science here and advance it also.” To this end, many important foundation stones are being laid in 2017.
Conventions in 2017
New fairs and old favourites make Hamburg a magnet for many sectors
Hamburg is set to host many conventions in 2017. Two premieres will be held this year: home² from January 27-29, 2017 – a fair for homeowners and those interested in building and renovating. From October 13-15, the Hamburg Motor Classics will be held for the first time in Hamburg’s fairgrounds and targets fans of vintage vehicles. The second round of regional order days will be held in July 2017.
New York Times counts Hamburg among "52 Places to Go"
Speicherstadt and Elbphilharmonie convinced editors - Hamburg is a "haven for architecture and design"
The New York Times has ranked Hamburg tenth among “52 Places to Go” in 2017, according to a report last Wednesday (January 4) in which the Hanse city is described as “a haven for architecture and design”. The imminent opening of the city’s latest landmark, the Elbphilharmonie, has led to Hamburg’s inclusion and as the only German city in the ranking. Detroit, Michigan came ninth and is lauded as a “comeback city”. Hamburg is followed by Morocco’s Marrakesh, which has been hailed as a “spiritual resting place”. Canada topped the ranking as a “world to explore”.

Around 25,000 athletes and more than 750,000 spectators from all over the world gather every year for Germany's largest spring marathon. Its course leads past Hamburg's top sights - and the event has only seen very little rain since its inauguration over 30 years ago.
